On January 20, 1961, John f. Kennedy was sworn in as President of the United States, 35. In the inauguration speech, Kennedy urged the American people to be active citizens, "don't ever ask the country can do for us, let's ask ourselves what can be done for this country" ("Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country).
