Đối với Việt Nam, mô hình tăng trưởng kinh tế hiện nay chủ yếu phát triển theo chiều rộng (khai thác và xuất khẩu tài nguyên thô, đầu tư dàn trải theo chiều rộng cho khu vực kinh tế nhà nước). Mô hình tăng trưởng đó đã bộc lộ những hạn chế, làm giảm khả năng phát triển của nền kinh tế, nhất là trong bối cảnh hội nhập kinh tế quốc tế. Hậu quả của việc duy trì quá lâu mô hình tăng trưởng theo chiều rộng đã dẫn đến việc khai thác cạn kiệt nguồn tài nguyên thiên nhiên, nguồn lao động không được quan tâm đào tạo, bồi dưỡng nên chất lượng còn thấp, không đáp ứng yêu cầu phát triển nền kinh tế theo hướng CNH-HĐH. Năng lực cạnh tranh của sản phẩm cũng như của doanh nghiệp và nền kinh tế còn thấp.
