Cuộc sống tự lập là một trải nghiệm quý giá trong đời của tôi. Một đứa trẻ 12 tuổi nhưng phải sống xa gia đình và thiếu thốn tình yêu thương của cha mẹ quả thật là cô độc và tội nghiệp cho một đứa trẻ như vậy. Cha tôi đã dạy tôi rằng sẽ đến một ngày cha tôi không còn trên cõi đời này nữa và lúc đó chính tôi sẽ phải tự lựa chọn và quyết định cho bản thân mình. Đó là một ngày buồn nhất đối với một đứa trẻ phải rời xa ngôi nhà yêu thương của mình để bước vào cuộc sống của một xã hội thực sự khi không có cha mẹ bên cạnh.
Năm đó cha tôi đã chuyển tôi lên SaiGon để học tại một trường dân lập. Mọi thứ dường như hoàn toàn mới đối với tôi. Một đứa trẻ sinh ra và lớn lên ở làng quê thì làm sao hiểu được hết cuộc sống của người thành thị. Lúc đó tôi vừa chập chửng vào trung học và không hề biết gì về cuộc sống ở Saigon. Tôi cảm thấy sợ và xin cha cho tôi về lại nhà. Thật không may mắn khi cha tôi đã không đồng ý và ép tôi phải vào ở trong một ký túc xá. Tôi lúc đó cái gì cũng cần đến sự giúp đỡ của gia đình mà không thể tự quyết định cho mình một thứ gì. Nhưng cũng đúng thôi, vì một đứa trẻ chỉ 12 tuổi thì nó không thể làm được gì. Tôi lúc đó cảm thấy rất sợ hãi vì xung quanh tôi toàn là người lạ và có người đến từ những nơi tôi chưa từng được nghe qua.
Lúc đó tôi đã nhận ra rằng một môi trường mới đang chờ tôi và trước mắt tôi là những thách thức vô cùng lớn. Ngày khai trường cũng đã đến và tôi bắt đầu sinh hoạt theo phong cách một người thành thị. Tôi không thể chơi những trò chơi mà mọi ngày tôi vẫn hay chơi với đám bạn như là thả diều, bắn bi và đi bơi ở những dòng sông lãng mạng mang đậm chất quê. Những thứ xung quanh tôi lúc đó là những chiếc máy vi tính, những chiếc xe hơi của những người thành thị nhìn nó đẹp làm sao.
