Trong quá trình giao lưu và hội nhập văn hóa với các nước phát triển, chúng ta đã tiếp thu được nhiều giá trị và kinh nghiệm sáng tạo mới. Các tác phẩm văn hóa nghệ thuật nước ngoài chính là cầu nối trong việc truyền bá văn hóa thế giới đến với người Việt. Trong quá trình hội nhập với văn hóa toàn cầu, chúng ta cần phải chọn lọc những chuẩn mực giá trị mới phù hợp với mục tiêu phát triển văn hóa và nhân cách Việt Nam. Đó là những giá trị gắn liền với mục tiêu: dân giàu, nước mạnh, xã hội công bằng, dân chủ và văn minh; những giá trị gắn với sự phát triển đa dạng và toàn diện nhân cách; những giá trị gắn với chân - thiện - mỹ... Quá trình hội nhập, tiếp thu các giá trị nói chung và giá trị văn hóa nói riêng từ bên ngoài cần phải tránh tâm lý sính ngoại, tự ty dân tộc, coi của người khác là văn minh, là hiện đại còn của mình là lỗi thời, là lạc hậu. Do vậy, việc tiếp thu những giá trị văn hóa của nhân loại phải có sự chọn lọc, phải dựa trên nền tảng của văn hóa dân tộc mình. Đối với Việt Nam thì nền tảng đó chính là những giá trị văn hóa truyền thống đã được hình thành và phát triển trong suốt quá trình dựng nước và giữ nước được lưu truyền đến ngày nay.
