Lượng rác thải ở Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh lên tới 6.000 tấn/ngày, trong đó một phần lượng rác thải rắn không được thu gom hết. Kết quả quan trắc năm 2007 cho thấy, so với năm 2006, sự ô nhiễm hữu cơ tăng 2 đến 4 lần. Các phương tiện giao thông, hoạt động xây dựng, sản xuất... còn góp phần gây ô nhiễm không khí. Khu vực ngoại thành, đất cũng bị ô nhiễm do tồn đọng thuốc bảo vệ thực vật từ sản xuất nông nghiệp gây nên.
