Nhóm tham khảo của một người bao gồm những nhóm có ảnh hưởng trực tiếp (mặt đối mặt) hay gián tiếp đến thái độ hay hành vi của người đó. Những nhóm có ảnh hưởng trực tiếp đến một người gọi là những nhóm thành viên. Đó là những nhóm mà người đó tham gia và có tác động qua lại. Có những nhóm là nhóm sơ cấp, như gia đình, bạn bè, hàng xóm láng giềng, và đồng nghiệp, mà người đó có quan hệ giao tiếp thường xuyên.
