Nguyễn Huệ (1753 – 1792) tại Bình Định. Ông lên ngôi vua năm 1788 lấy niên hiệu là Quang Trung. Sau 20 năm liên tục chinh chiến và trị quốc, Nguyễn Huệ lâm bệnh và đột ngột qua đời ở tuổi 40. Cuộc đời hoạt động của Nguyễn Huệ được một số sử gia đánh giá là đã đóng góp quyết định vào sự nghiệp thống nhất đất nước của triều đại Tây Sơn. Một trong những cuộc hành quân của ông, nổi bật nhất là trận tiến quân ra Bắc chống quân Thanh.
NGUYÊN NHÂN CỦA HÀNH TRÌNH
Thế kỷ 18, nước Đại Việt nằm dưới quyền cai trị của vua Lê Chiêu thống bù nhìn nhà Thanh, có danh mà không có quyền hành chính trị. Nhân dân than thở với nhau: “Nước Nam ta từ khi có đế, có vương đến nay, chưa thấy bao giờ có ông vua luồn cúi đế hèn như thế”. Nhà Thanh với mưu đồ man rợ muốn trả thù quân Tây Sơn. Ngày 22/12/1788, ở Phú Xuân, Quan Trung nhận được tin quân Thanh đã chiếm đóng Thăng Long. Ông lập tức thống lĩnh đại quân tiến ra Bắc.
4 ngày sau, đại quân của vua Quang Trung chỉ hơn 10 ngày tại Nghệ An đã nâng quân số lên tới 10 vạn, tổ chức thành 4 đạo quân cùng với 200 voi chiến.
