Khu vực phòng vệ: gồm vòng thành bao quanh bên ngoài, cổng thành, các hồ (hào), cầu và đài quan sát.

Hưng Tổ Miếu ở bên phải Nguyễn Phúc Luân.
Thế Tổ Miếu thờ các vị vua nhà Nguyễn.
Khu vực dành cho bà nội và mẹ vua (phía sau, bên phải), gồm hệ thống cung Trường Sanh (dành cho các Thái hoàng Thái hậu) và cung Diên Thọ (dành cho các Hoàng Thái hậu).
Khu vực dành cho các hoàng tử học tập, giải trí như vườn Cơ Hạ, điện Khâm văn... (phía sau, bên trái).
Ngoài ra còn có kho tàng (Phủ Nội vụ) và các xưởng chế tạo đồ dùng cho hoàng gia (phía trước vườn Cơ Hạ)
Khu vực Tử Cấm Thành nằm trên cùng một trục Bắc-Nam với Hoàng Thành và Kinh Thành, gồm một vòng tường thành bao quanh khu vực các cung điện như
Điện Cần Chánh (nơi vua tổ chức lễ Thường triều).
Điện Càn Thành (chỗ ở của vua).
Điện Khôn Thái (chỗ ở của Hoàng Quý phi),
Điện Kiến Trung (từng là nơi ở của vua Bảo Đại và Hoàng hậu Nam Phương),
