Tet is probably the most important and popular of traditional Vietnamese holidays. It can be said that this is the most expected festival in Vietnam annually. But as time elapses, the way that people welcome Tet has been changing dramatically.
I can remember clearly how eager I was when I waited for Tet. It was something very holy and special. In other words, it used to be very meaningful and joyful for me when I was a child. At that time, this was the special vacation when members of the grand family gather and do many activities together. And one of the most cheerful activities is to wait for New Year’s Eve together. This waiting is usually accompanied with letting off firecrackers. Another activity is to make banh chung together which each of every children tried to make their own shaped cake. Children also received red envelops joyfully from adult and wish for the best. Adolescent played card, roller coaster and a lot of other games that they cannot make in usual days because of being short of money.
But now, as a adult, I see a totally different picture. The old activities, such as New Year’s Eve party, do not have its joyfulness as it used to. This is because the grand family do not gather in full number as everyone has their own life and friends. The new child generation who grow up in the new lifestyle are not interested in traditional activities. They do not feel bonding to the grand family as their parents’ generation. Banh chung is not made by members of each family but there is another choice in shop as people do not have much time for making it.
I am feeling that the spiritual values of Tet holiday are gradually fading away as new lifestyle is forming and influences all aspects of life. And it may be a difficult problem of keep on practicing old activities in an industry environmental.
