Nếu khủng hoảng tài chính thế giới năm 2008 được coi là một cơn sóng thần, tàn phá nặng nề cho các nền kinh tế thế giới thì Việt nam được xem như một hòn đảo nhỏ nằm tương đối xa tâm chấn. Tuy nhiên, khi sóng thần lan tới thị trường tài chính Việt nam thì mặc dù đã bị suy yếu nhưng đã gây những tổn thất to lớn và lâu dài cho một hệ thống tài chính nhỏ bé nhưng vốn đã mang nhiều vấn đề nội tại.
