Câu chuyện xoay quanh nhân vật chính Otonashi, một chàng trai đã mất đi trí nhớ của mình sau khi chết. Tỉnh lại ở thế giới bên kia, anh gặp một cô gái tên là Yuri, cô mời anh tham gia Shinda Sekai Sensen (SSS) (死んだ世界戦線? tạm dịch: Chiến tuyến chống lại cái chết), một tổ chức do cô thành lập và lãnh đạo nhằm chống lại Thượng Đế vì sự sắp đặt số phận tàn nhẫn mà họ phải nhận. Their only enemies in that world is the Angel, the Student Council President, who has supernatural powers and fight the SSS. Yuri believes that those who hear the words of the Prophet and act like a normal student would disappear immediately and pass on. However, the people here will pass when their dreams while alive was completed.
