Già hoá dân số trong vài thập kỷ tới dự kiến diễn ra ở hầu hết các khu vực của thế giới, dẫn đầu là châu Âu với tỷ lệ 34% dân số trên 60 tuổi vào năm 2050. Ở khu vực Mỹ Latinh, vùng Caribe và châu Á, tỷ lệ dân số trên 60 tuổi sẽ tăng từ khoảng 11-12% hiện nay lên hơn 25% vào năm 2050. Châu Phi được coi là khu vực có tỷ lệ dân số trẻ nhất, nhưng số người ở độ tuổi từ 60 tuổi trở lên cũng tăng từ mức 5% hiện nay lên 9% vào năm 2050.
