Hiện nay ở Việt Nam, mặc dù các cấp, các ngành đã có nhiều cố gắng trong việc thực hiện chính sách và pháp luật về bảo vệ môi trường, nhưng tình trạng ô nhiễm nước là vấn đề rất đáng lo ngại. Tốc độ công nghiệp hoá và đô thị hoá khá nhanh và sự gia tăng dân số gây áp lực ngày càng nặng nề dối với tài nguyên nước trong vùng lãnh thổ.

Môi trường nước ở nhiều đô thị, khu công nghiệp và làng nghề ngày càng bị ô nhiễm bởi nước thải, khí thải và chất thải rắn. ở các thành phố lớn, hàng trăm cơ sở sản xuất công nghiệp đang gây ô nhiễm môi trường nước do không có công trình và thiết bị xử lý chất thải. Ô nhiễm nước do sản xuất công nghiệp là rất nặng.
Khảo sát một số làng nghề sắt thép, đúc đồng, nhôm, chì, giấy, dệt nhuộm ở Bắc Ninh cho thấy có lượng nước thải hàng ngàn m3/ ngày không qua xử lý, gây ô nhiễm nguồn nước và môi trường trong khu vực.


Tình trạng ô nhiễm nước ở các đô thị thấy rõ nhất là ở thành phố Hà Nội và thành phố Hồ Chí Minh. Ở các thành phố này, nước thải sinh hoạt không có hệ thống xử lý tập trung mà trực tiếp xả ra nguồn tiếp nhận (sông, hồ, kênh, mương). Mặt khác, còn rất nhiều cơ sở sản xuất không xử lý nước thải, phần lớn các bệnh viện và cơ sở y tế lớn chưa có hệ thống xử lý nước thải; một lượng rác thải rắn lớn trong thành phố không thu gom hết được… là những nguồn quan trọng gây ra ô nhiễm nước. Hiện nay, mức độ ô nhiễm trong các kênh, sông, hồ ở các thành phố lớn là rất nặng.



Do nuôi trồng thuỷ sản ồ ạt, thiếu quy hoạch, không tuân theo quy trình kỹ thuật nên đã gây nhiều tác động tiêu cực tới môi trường nước. Cùng với việc sử dụng nhiều và không đúng cách các loại hoá chất trong nuôi trồng thuỷ sản, thì các thức ăn dư lắng xuống đáy ao, hồ, lòng sông làm cho môi trường nước bị ô nhiễm các chất hữu cơ, làm phát triển một số loài sinh vật gây bệnh và xuất hiện một số tảo độc; thậm chí đã có dấu hiệu xuất hiện thuỷ triều đỏ ở một số vùng ven biển Việt Nam.


Có nhiều nguyên nhân khách quan và chủ quan dẫn đến tình trạng ô nhiễm môi trường nước, như sự gia tăng dân số, mặt trái của quá trình công nghiệp hoá, hiện đại hoá, cơ sở hạ tầng yếu kém, lạc hậu: nhận thức của người dân về vấn đề môi trường còn chưa cao

Along with the many uses and improper types of chemicals in aquaculture, the residual food floor ponds, lakes, rivers makes the environment polluted water of organic substances, some species of pathogenic organisms and toxic algae some appearance; even had signs of red tide occurred in some coastal regions of Vietnam. There are many objective and subjective causes leading to pollution of the water environment, such as the increase in population, the left side of the process of industrialization and modernization, infrastructure is weak, backward: people's awareness about environmental issues remain high
