Tuy nhiên đóng góp của tăng TFP vào tăng trưởng GDP của Việt Nam hiện nay còn quá thấp, ngay cả khi so sánh với các nước trong khu vực. Chẳng hạn, Malaysia, một nước Đông nam Á có điều kiện địa lý, văn hóa gần gũi với Việt Nam, cũng có tỷ trọng đóng góp của tăng TFP vào tăng trưởng GDP giai đoạn 2003-2007 lên tới trên 35%, vượt xa Việt Nam.
Như vậy, có thể thấy, 10 năm qua, đầu tư phát triển công nghệ, đào tạo và giáo dục của nền kinh tế Việt Nam đã có bước phát triển quan trọng song tiến bộ còn chậm, tác động của sự phát triển đó đối với tăng trưởng kinh tế còn chưa cao. Sự tăng trưởng kinh tế do tăng TFP còn ở mức khiêm tốn. Chính vì vậy, ở một góc độ nào đó có thể nói rằng sự tăng trưởng kinh tế chưa thật vững chắc. Để tiếp tục con đường phát triển kinh tế xã hội theo hướng công nghiệp hóa - hiện đại hóa, trong giai đoạn tiếp theo, Việt Nam cần nâng cao tốc độ tăng của TFP dựa trên cải thiện các yếu tố đóng góp vào TFP như: giáo dục và đào tạo, phát triển KH&CN, cơ cấu lại nền kinh tế, kích thích phát triển sản xuất v.v...
