Sở Nông nghiệp và Phát triển nông thôn Sóc Trăng, cho biết: tổng diện tích nuôi trồng thủy sản toàn tỉnh là 72.000 ha, trong đó diện tích nuôi tôm nước lợ là 45.000 ha, chiếm 62,5%. Nhu cầu giống để thả nuôi hàng năm rất lớn, trên 17 tỷ con giống với hơn 90% con giống được thả nuôi của tỉnh lệ thuộc vào nguồn cung cấp từ các tỉnh khác. Nhìn chung, nghề nuôi phát triển nhưng trong thời gian qua còn nhiều bất cập, nhất là việc đầu tư về thủy lợi, giao thông, điện chưa đáp ứng nhu cầu phát triển về diện tích nuôi, đối tượng nuôi. Năng lực người nuôi tôm, nhất là các hộ nuôi quy mô nhỏ, trình độ ứng dụng tiến bộ kỹ thuật, vốn đầu tư còn hạn chế… Một số khu nuôi không có hệ thống xử lý kém hiệu quả, cộng vào đó tác động của biến đổi khí hậu những năm gần đây cũng làm dịch bệnh gia tăng.

Ông Châu Công Bằng, Phó Giám đốc Sở Nông nghiệp và Phát triển nông thôn Cà Mau bày tỏ, mặc dù có diện tích nuôi trồng thủy sản lớn nhất vùng ĐBSCL (296.000 ha), trong đó nuôi nước ngọt khoảng 28.000 ha, còn lại chủ yếu là nuôi tôm nước lợ với hơn 260.000 ha. Nhưng cơ sở hạ tầng về điện, thủy lợi, cấp thoát nước… của tỉnh chưa đáp ứng cho nhu cầu sản xuất. Để đầu tư xây dựng hệ thống thủy lợi phục vụ cho vùng nuôi này nguồn vốn dự kiến cần khoảng 15.000 tỷ đồng, trong khi ngân sách của tỉnh mỗi năm chỉ đầu tư được 200 tỷ đồng.
