Ngày nay, cùng với sự phát triển không ngừng của xã hội là lượng thông tin gia tăng một cách nhanh chóng, mọi sự vật và hiện tượng đều biến đổi không ngừng. Nhiều sự vật và hiện tượng có mối liên hệ với nhau, muốn nhận biết và giải quyết các sự vật, hiện tượng này cần huy động tổng hợp các kiến thức và kĩ năng từ nhiều lĩnh vực khác nhau. Bên cạnh đó, trong quá trình phát triển của khoa học và giáo dục, nhiều kiến thức, kĩ năng chưa hoặc chưa cần thiết trở thành một môn học trong nhà trường, nhưng lại rất cần chuẩn bị cho học sinh để họ có thể đối mặt với những thách thức của cuộc sống; do đó cần tích hợp giáo dục các kiến thức và kĩ năng đó thông qua các môn học.
