The terrainItaly is a peninsula with a long, bounded in the West by the Tyrrhenian Sea and on the East by the Adriatic Sea. The country borders France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia in the North. The Alps form the backbone of the peninsula; and is also the northern border. Northern regions many lakes with largest lakes is Garda (143 sq mi; 370 square kilometers); Po, the main river, flowing from the Alps on the western border of Italy the Lombardy plain across the Adriatic Sea. The country also has many islands; the largest are Sicily (9,926 sq mi; 25,708 km²) and Sardinia (9,301 sq mi; 24,090 km².
