Năm 2005, sau khi TTGDCK Hà Nội đi vào hoạt động, tổng số các công ty niêm yết trên cả hai thị trường là 44 công ty với tổng giá trị niêm yết là 4,94 nghìn tỷ đồng. Tuy nhiên, nhìn chung giai đoạn 2000-2005 là giai đoạn hoạt động khá trầm của TTCK Việt Nam.Kể từ năm 2006 đến nay, TTCK Việt Nam bắt đầu khởi sắc và đã có bước tăng trưởng mạnh mẽ cả về số lượng công ty niêm yết lẫn doanh số giao dịch. Tính đến cuối năm 2009, đã có 541 doanh nghiệp niêm yết cổ phiếu trên cả hai SGDCK và 4 chứng chỉ quỹ đại chúng niêm yết, với tổng giá trị niêm yết đạt 127,489 nghìn tỷ đồng, tăng 66,5 lần so với cuối năm 2005. Tổng giá trị vốn hóa thị trường tính tại thời điểm ngày 31/12/2009 ước đạt 620,551 ngàn tỷ đồng tương đương với gần 38% GDP cả năm 2009.
