Cairns is a city in Far North Queensland, Australia. The city has a population of 150,920 people (2010) [1] [5]. Cairns was founded in 1876. The city was named after William Wellington Cairns, who was then Governor of Queensland. It was formed to serve miners flocked to the Hodgkinson River gold mine, but experienced a decline when an easier route was discovered from Port Douglas.
