Năm 1992: khái niệm hội nhập kinh tế ASEAN lần đầu tiên được đưa ra trong Hiệp định khung về Thúc đẩy Hợp tác Kinh tế ASEAN ký tại Singapore. Hiệp định này nhấn mạnh tầm quan trọng trong hợp tác trong các lĩnh vực thương mại, công nghiệp, năng lượng và khoáng sản, tài chính và ngân hàng, thực phẩm, nông nghiệp và lâm nghiệp, giao thông và truyền thông. Năm 1992: Hiệp định về Chương trình Ưu đãi Thuế quan có hiệu lực chung (CEPT) được ký kết, sau đó được thay thế bởi Hiệp định về Thương mại Hàng hoá ASEAN 2010.

Năm 1995: Hiệp định khung về Dịch vụ ASEAN được ký kết. Năm 1998: Hiệp định khung về Đầu tư ASEAN được ký kết, sau đó được thay thế bởi Hiệp định Đầu tư toàn diện ASEAN 2012. Năm 2003: Tại Hội nghị Thượng đỉnh ASEAN 9, các nhà lãnh đạo ASEAN lần đầu tiên tuyên bố mục tiêu hình thành một Cộng đồng Kinh tế ASEAN (AEC). Mục tiêu này cũng phù hợp với Tầm nhìn ASEAN 2020 thông qua vào năm 1997 với mục tiêu phát triển ASEAN thành một Cộng đồng ASEAN. Năm 2006: Tại cuộc họp các Bộ trưởng Kinh tế ASEAN lần thứ 38, Kế hoạch tổng thể xây dựng AEC (AEC Blueprint) đã được đưa ra với các mục tiêu và lộ trình cụ thể cho việc thực hiện AEC. Năm 2007: Tại Hội nghị thượng đỉnh ASEAN lần thứ 12, các nhà lãnh đạo ASEAN đã đồng ý đẩy nhanh việc hình thành AEC vào năm 2015 thay vì 2020 như kế hoạch ban đầu

Ngày 22/11/2015: Tại Hội nghị thượng đỉnh ASEAN lần thứ 27, các nhà lãnh đạo ASEAN đã ký kết Tuyên bố Kuala Lumpur về việc thành lập AEC

This Agreement emphasized the importance of cooperation in the fields of trade, industry, energy and mining, banking and finance, food, agriculture and forestry, transport and communications. 1992: agreement on preferential tariff program in effect (CEPT) signed, then was replaced by the agreement on trade in goods of ASEAN 2010.1995: framework agreement on ASEAN service was signed. 1998: framework agreement on the ASEAN investment was concluded, then was replaced by the ASEAN comprehensive investment agreement in 2012. 2003: At the 9th ASEAN Summit, the ASEAN leaders for the first time declared the goal of forming an ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). This objective also fits with the ASEAN Vision 2020 adopted in 1997 with the goal of developing ASEAN into a ASEAN community. 2006: at the meeting of ASEAN Economic Ministers 38th overall construction plan, AEC (AEC Blueprint) was launched with the objectives and specific roadmap for the implementation of the AEC. 2007: In the ASEAN Summit, the 12th ASEAN leaders agreed to accelerate the AEC by 2015 instead of 2020 as originally plannedOn 22/11/2015: At the Summit of the 27th ASEAN, ASEAN leaders signed the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on the establishment of the AEC
