Theo Hiệp hội Nhựa (VPA), cả nước hiện có hơn 2.000 doanh nghiệp nhựa với công suất khoảng 3,8 triệu tấn sản phẩm nhựa/năm .Nguyên liệu trong nước mới chỉ đáp ứng được khoảng 10% nhu cầu, mỗi năm ngành nhựa vẫn phải nhập khẩu 2 - 2,5 triệu tấn nguyên liệu nhựa các loại như PE, PP, ABS, PC, PS. Trong đó, 80% nguyên liệu nhựa là nhựa phế liệu .
