Ông Vladimir Putin sinh ngày 7 tháng Mười 1952 trong gia đình công nhân tại Leningrad (từ năm 1991 đổi tên thành Saint-Peterburg). Từ nhỏ, ông đã ham thích rèn luyện thể thao và ưa xem những bộ phim về các chiến sĩ tình báo.
Năm 1975, ông Putin tốt nghiệp ngành Luật quốc tế tại Đại học Tổng hợp Quốc gia Leningrad. Theo sự phân công ông nhận công tác trong cơ quan an ninh quốc gia.
Năm 1984, ông học tập tại Trường Cao cấp của KGB (nay là Trường Tình báo đối ngoại), theo chuyên ngành các nước nói tiếng Đức.
Năm 1985, ông công tác tại CHDC Đức cho đến cuối năm 1989, làm Giám đốc Nhà Hữu nghị Xô-Đức ở Dresden.
Trở lại Saint-Peterburg, ông Putin thành cố vấn của Chủ tịch Hội đồng thành phố Anatoly Sobchak, người mà ông quen biết khi còn ở trường đại học. Từ năm 1994 ông Vladimir Putin là phó Chủ tịch chính quyền Saint-Peterburg. Ở cương vị này, ông phụ trách các vấn đề liên quan đến thu hút đầu tư, hợp tác với các công ty nước ngoài và thành lập các công ty liên doanh.
Năm 1992 ông rời KGB với hàm trung tá quân dự bị.

Tháng Bẩy 1998, ông Putin được chỉ định làm Giám đốc Cơ quan An ninh Liên bang, đồng thời từ tháng Ba 1999 ông trở thành Thư ký Hội đồng An ninh Nga.
Đến tháng Tám 1999, ông được bổ nhiệm làm Thủ tướng Chính phủ.
Ngày 31 tháng Chạp 1999, sau khi Tổng thống Nga đầu tiên Boris Yeltsin từ chức trước thời hạn, ông Vladimir Putin trở thành Quyền Tổng thống.
Ngày 26 tháng Ba 2000, nhận được sự ủng hộ của 52,94% cử tri Nga, ông Vladimir Putin được bầu làm Tổng thống LB Nga.
Ông Putin nhậm chức nguyên thủ quốc gia ngày 7 tháng Năm 2000.
Ngày 14 tháng Ba 2004 ông Vladimir Putin tái đắc cử Tổng thống Nga nhiệm kỳ thứ hai với 71,31% số phiếu cử tri.
Tháng Tư 2008, ông được bầu làm Chủ tịch đảng "Nước Nga thống nhất". Tuy nhiên ông Putin chưa bao giờ gia nhập đảng.
Ngày 7 tháng Năm 2008 ông kết thúc nhiệm kỳ Tổng thống Nga.
Từ ngày 8 tháng Năm 2008 cho đến 6 tháng Năm 2012 ông Putin là Thủ tướng Chính phủ Nga.
Mùa thu 2011 ông Vladimir Putin được đảng "Nước Nga thống nhất" giới thiệu tranh cử Tổng thống.
Trong cuộc bầu cử Tổng thống ngày 4 tháng Ba 2012, ông Vladimir Putin đã giành chiến thắng với kết quả nhận được 63,6% phiếu bầu của cử tri Nga.
Ông Vladimir Putin là Tiến sĩ Kinh tế, thông thạo tiếng Đức và tiếng Anh,
Ông Putin là kiện tướng thể thao về võ Sambo và Judo, ưa thích môn trượt tuyết trên núi.
