Nguy cơ thay thế trong lĩnh vực dầu khí trong ngắn hạn không cao. Sự ổn định của đất nước và uy tín của Việt Nam nói chung, cũng như của Tập đoàn Dầu khí Quốc gia Việt Nam nói riêng trên trường quốc tế ngày càng được nâng cao là điều kiện rất quan trọng để Petrovietnam có thể huy động mọi nguồn lực cả trong và ngoài nước cho sự phát triển nhanh, bền vững.
Tuy nhiên về dài hạn thì áp lực từ sản phẩm thay thế là khá cao. Do dầu khí là tài nguyên có hạn và theo dự kiến sẽ chỉ còn có thể khai thác trong vòng khoảng 60 năm. Chính vì vậy các lĩnh vực năng lượng khác đang được ráo riết nghiên cứu và đưa vào khai thác sử dụng
