Có thể xem ASEAN như một sân chơi nhỏ cấp khu vực giúp Việt Nam làm quen với các luật chơi chung của quốc tế để dần tham gia vào tiến trình hội nhập quốc tế như APEC, WTO,…
Năm 1992, Việt Nam tham gia Hiệp ước Bali và đến tháng 7/1995 chính thức gia nhập ASEAN. Hiện nay Việt Nam đã tham gia hầu hết mọi lĩnh vực của ASEAN với tư cách thành viên đầy đủ. Việt Nam tham gia Khu Mậu Dịch Tự Do ASEAN từ năm 1996.

ASEAN may be viewed as a small playground area to help Vietnam get familiar with the General rules of international to gradually participate in the process of international integration as APEC, WTO, ... In 1992, Vietnam join the Bali Treaty of July 1995 and officially joined the ASEAN. Currently Vietnam has participated in almost all areas of ASEAN as a full member. Vietnam joins the ASEAN Free Trade Area since 1996.
