Thế kỉ thứ XVIII ở Việt Nam đã xuất hiện những tờ báo tiếng Pháp đầu tiên như Nam Kì viễn chinh công báo (Le Bulletin officiel de l’Expédition de la Cocochine) năm 1861. Nhưng việc nghiên cứu về ngôn ngữ báo chí thì mãi tới thế kỉ thứ XX vẫn còn hết sức thưa thớt. Tuy gắn liền với địa hạt phong cách ngôn ngữ, nhưng ở những công trình học thuật phong cách học của thế kỉ trước chưa thấy có phong cách ngôn ngữ báo chí. Những tác phẩm như cuốn Giáo trình Việt Ngữ tập 3 – Tu từ học của Đinh Trọng Lạc, Tu từ học tiếng Việt hiện đại của bộ ba tác giả Cù Đình Tú, Lê Anh Hiền, Nguyễn Nguyên Trứ… đều có tiến hành phân loại mà không hề đề cập tới một phong cách ngôn ngữ cụ thể thuộc về báo chí. Và mãi tới năm 1993 trong cuốn PCH tiếng Việt của Đinh Trọng Lạc mới có sự xuất hiện của cái gọi là “Phong cách báo chí – công luận”. Như vậy, trải qua một thời gian dài, phong cách này mới được công nhận và đứng trong hệ thống phân loại phong cách ngôn ngữ tiếng Việt.
Như vậy, lịch sử nghiên cứu ngôn ngữ báo chí có thể nói là hãy còn non trẻ. Từ việc giới thiệu một cách cơ bản các đặc điểm của ngôn ngữ báo chí của Nguyễn Đức Dân trong cuốn Ngôn ngữ báo chí – Những vấn đề cơ bản cho tới Nguyễn Tri Niên với những nhận định về chất liệu ngôn ngữ - đơn vị cấu thành nên phần nội dung và hình thức của một tờ báo trong cuốn Ngôn ngữ báo chí . Hay chi tiết và công phu nhất có thể kể đến cuốn Ngôn ngữ báo chí , tác giả Vũ Quang Hào đã tìm hiểu từ góc độ đơn vị, phân định mỗi bộ phận của một ấn phẩm truyền thông gắn liền với những đặc trưng ngôn ngữ riêng biệt không trộn lẫn, từ Title đến Maquette, từ khâu sáng tác cho tới khâu phát hành. Dù là ở khía cạnh nào cũng đã sơ bộ hình thành nên một thang lý luận cơ bản phục vụ hiệu quả cho việc nghiên cứu ngôn ngữ báo chí. Tuy vậy, riêng với vấn đề mà khóa luận này đề cập tới, trong quá trình tìm hiệu vẫn chưa thấy có một tác giả nào đưa ra một công trình cụ thể. Do đó, đây có thể được xem như một vấn đề có tính mới mẻ.
Về vấn đề đồng nghĩa, đây là một mối liên hệ đã được nhiều nhà ngôn ngữ học chú ý từ lâu. Riêng ở Việt Nam, từ rất sớm đã có các công trình đề cập tới hiện tượng đồng nghĩa như Từ điển Từ đồng nghĩa Tiếng Việt của Nguyễn Văn Tu, Từ vựng học tiếng Việt của Nguyễn Thiện Giáp, Giáo trình từ vựng học tiếng Việt của Đỗ Hữu Châu. Nhìn chung, các nhà ngôn ngữ học này đều đã đưa ra các định nghĩa riêng về hiện tượng đồng nghĩa, đồng thời cũng tiến hành phân tích các vấn đề liên quan. Mỗi người đều thể hiện được góc nhìn riêng của cá nhân, ví dụ như Nguyễn Thiện Giáp đã tiến hành phân loại các từ đồng nghĩa dựa trên khác biệt về ý nghĩa biểu vật, ý nghĩa biểu niệm. Đỗ Hữu Châu thì chỉ ra một số đặc trừng của từ đồng nghĩa như sự phong phú về mặt số lượng, là biểu hiện cho nét đẹp của tiếng Việt… Đây đều là những lý thuyết cơ bản, có tầm quan trọng rất lớn trong việc đặt nền móng cho việc đi sâu nghiên cứu về hiện tượng này. Đa số các tác giả trên đều tập trung nghiên cứu ở cấp độ từ, tới thời điểm gần đây mới có thêm các công trình nghiên cứu ở những cấp độ cao hơn. Ví dụ như Nguyễn Hữu Chương xem xét ở cấp độ câu ( luận án Một số vấn đề về câu đẳng nghĩa (đồng nghĩa) của tiếng Việt so sánh với tiếng Anh) hoặc Đỗ Thị Thu Hương cụ thể hóa vấn đề bằng việc tìm hiểu hiện tượng đồng nghĩa trong hệ thống thành ngữ tiếng Việt. Tất cả những kết quả đó đều là tiền đề đáng quí để hoàn thành được nghiên cứu này.
