Năm 1908, quân đội Pháp cho xây dựng Nhà tù Sơn La khá kiên cố trong diện tích khoảng 500m2 với tường đá gạch, mái tôn không trần. Nơi đây, các giường nằm dành cho tù nhân đều xây bằng đá và mép ngoài có hệ thống cùm chân dọc theo chiều dài sàn. Ngoài việc phải chịu những tra tấn khốc liệt của thời tiết từ gió Lào mùa hè và cái rét cắt da mùa đông ra, tù nhân nơi đây còn phải hứng chịu những đòn tra tấn, đàn áp dã man của quân đội Pháp.

Văn bia “Quế Lâm Ngự Chế” là bút tích quý giá còn lại của Vua Lê Thái Tông nằm tại trung tâm thành phố Sơn La. Tại đây, tháng 5 năm 1440, sau trận chinh phạt quân phiến loạn Tây Bắc, vua đã nghỉ lại và tức cảnh sinh tình viết nên bài thơ để đời khắc trên vách đá thẳng đứng tại cửa động La (Thẩm Ké).
