U21 sẽ tham dự bóng đá nam SEA Games?
Lần đầu tiên trong lịch sử SEA Games, môn bóng đá nam có thể chuyển đổi thành phần tham dự từ bộ khung U23 hiện tại sang bộ khung U21, ở SEA Games 2017 tổ chức tại Kuala Lumpur. Theo một nguồn tin đáng tin cậy từ Liên đoàn bóng đá Singapore (FAS), đề xuất này đã được bàn thảo rất thận trọng trong cuộc họp hội đồng Liên đoàn bóng đá Đông Nam Á (AFF) diễn ra hồi giữa tháng 11.
Sắp tới, đề xuất này cần có sự chấp thuận của Liên đoàn bóng đá Malaysia – chủ nhà của giải đấu 2017 – cùng với ban tổ chức SEA Games và Liên đoàn bóng đá châu Á (AFC). Tuy nhiên, “phán quyết” cuối cùng nằm ở Liên đoàn thể thao Đông Nam Á (SEAGF).
Lý giải cho đề xuất này, ông Azzuddin Ahmad, Tổng thư ký AFF, cho rằng Đông Nam Á đang cần nhiều giải đấu đỉnh cao, trong khi bóng đá U21 cũng thiếu các cuộc tranh tài đẳng cấp và SEA Games có thể góp phần bù đắp khoảng trống này. Hơn thế nữa, SEA Games sẽ góp phần quan trọng vào sự chuẩn bị của các đội bóng Đông Nam Á cho chiến dịch vòng loại Olympic Tokyo 2020. Đề xuất này sẽ tiếp tục được bàn thảo sâu hơn tại cuộc họp hội đồng AFF trong tháng tới.
