Hiện nay tình trạng giết mổ gia súc, gia cầm thủ công tự phát đang xảy ra ở rất nhiều nơi. Với số lượng điểm giết mổ nhỏ lẻ nhiều và phân bố rải rác khắp các khu dân cư đặc biệt là ở khu vực ven đô và vùng nông thôn làm cho lực lượng cán bộ thú y gặp nhiều khó khăn khi thực hiện kiểm soát giết mổ. Đặc biệt là những nơi đông dân cư, nhu cầu thực phẩm cao đòi hỏi nguồn cung cấp nhiều và rẻ. Bên cạnh đó các cơ quan chức năng chưa kiểm soát triệt để về vấn đề này nên đã làm cho các điểm giết mổ thủ công mọc lên khắp nơi.
