In 1937, Takemitsu was sent to Japan to parents but soon learned they had to stop because of the war. Like other Japanese citizens, he must join served in the Imperial Japanese Army and this can be seen as the darkest period of his life. After the Second World War, the American occupation of Japan, Takemitsu served in the US Army, but he was sick in bed for a long time. While in hospital, he rushed to learn Western music, and decided to stop exposure to traditional Japanese music because he said it reminded him past horrors of war.
