Dưới góc nhìn của một nhà khoa học, phát biểu tại Hội nghị, GS.VS Nguyễn Văn Hiệu đặt ra những câu hỏi cụ thể về hướng nghiên cứu KHCB đối với Việt Nam để các nhà khoa học quốc tế cùng quan tâm, góp ý. Theo GS Nguyễn Văn Hiệu, Việt Nam đang tồn tại hàng loạt những vấn đề nóng cần được giải quyết. Đó là tình trạng bệnh tật tăng nhanh; ảnh hưởng ngày càng nghiêm trọng của biến đổi khí hậu; hạn hán, xâm nhập mặn... ở các tỉnh Tây Nguyên, Nam Trung Bộ, lũ lụt tại các tỉnh miền núi phía Bắc... vì vậy nghiên cứu KHCB định hướng ứng dụng cần tiếp tục được đẩy mạnh
