Tổ chức Tiêu chuẩn Quốc tế (International Standards Organization - ISO) đã quy định các tiêu chuẩn về phòng sạch tiêu chuẩn quốc tế. Tiêu chuẩn ISO 14644-1 được phát hành năm 1999 có tên "Phân loại độ sạch không khí" (Classification of Air Cleanliness). Các loại phòng sạch được quy định dựa trên biểu thức:

với:
Cn¬ là hàm lượng cho phép tối đa (tính bằng số hạt/m3) của bụi lửng không khí lớn hơn hoặc bằng kích thước xem xét.
N là chỉ số phân loại ISO, không vượt quá 9 và chỉ số cho phép nhỏ nhất là 0,1
D là đường kính hạt tính theo μm
0,1 ở đây là hằng số với thứ nguyên là μm.
Như vậy, có thể dễ dàng xác định các giới hạn hàm lượng bụi từ công thức trên và dễ dàng phân loại từng cấp phòng sạch (bảng 3).

Thus, we can easily determine the concentration limit dust from the above formula and easily categorize each level clean room (table 3).
