Đồng thời cũng cần phân biệt khái niệm DTTS với khái niệm chủng tộc, bởi vì chủng tộc là những nhóm người hình thành trong lịch sử trên một lãnh thổ nhất định, có một số đặc điểm chung trên cơ thể mang tính di truyền (ví dụ: chủng tộc da Trắng, da Vàng, da Đen).
