Những rủi ro về sức khỏe liên quan đến tình trạng thừa cân được biết đến nhiều, nay các nhà nghiên cứu cho biết thêm thừa cân là thủ phạm của gần nửa triệu ca ung thư mới mỗi năm.
Tạp chí The Lancet Oncology ngày 25-11 đăng báo cáo của Trung tâm nghiên cứu ung thư quốc tế (International Agency for Research on Cancer) thuộc Tổ chức Y tế thế giới (WHO) cho biết chỉ số tương quan giữa lượng mỡ trong cơ thể người với chiều cao càng lớn thì rủi ro mắc các chứng ung thư như ung thư ruột già, thận, vú và tuyến tụy càng cao.
Báo cáo cho biết năm 2012, 481.000 người mắc ung thư có liên quan đến thừa cân, chiếm 3,6% tổng số ca ung thư trên toàn cầu. Trong đó, khu vực Bắc Mỹ dẫn đầu số ca ung thư mới liên quan đến thừa cân với 110.000 ca, tiếp theo là châu Âu với 65.000 ca.
Các nhà nghiên cứu nói theo đà phát triển kinh tế, số ca ung thư mới trên toàn cầu liên quan đến thừa cân dự báo sẽ tăng thêm.
