Công tác thu gom thông thường sử dụng 2 hình thức là thu gom sơ cấp (người dân tự thu gom vào các thùng/túi chứa sau đó được công nhân thu gom vào các thùng rác đẩy tay cỡ nhỏ) và thu gom thứ cấp (rác các hộ gia đình được công nhân thu gom vào các xe đẩy tay sau đó chuyển đến các xe ép rác chuyên dụng và chuyển đến khu xử lý hoặc tại các chợ/khu dân cư có đặt container chứa rác, công ty môi trường đô thị có xe chuyên dụng chở container đến khu xử lý).
