Vườn quốc gia Cát Bà có diện tích 26.240 ha, trong đó 17.040 ha đất đảo và 9.200 ha mặt nước biển. Ðây là nơi hội tụ nhiều hệ sinh thái (HST) khác nhau: HST rừng ngập mặn, HST rừng trên núi đá vôi, HST rừng biển với các rạn san hô. Có một hệ động thực vật đa dạng, gồm 2.320 loài động thực vật, trong đó có 282 loài động vật sống trong rừng, 538 loài động vật sống ở đáy biển, 196 loài cá biển, 771 loài thực vật trên cạn, 23 loài thực vật ngập mặn, 75 loài rong biển, 177 loài san hô... Ðặc biệt quần đảo Cát Bà có đến 60 loài đặc hữu quý hiếm được đưa vào Sách đỏ Việt Nam như: Ðộng vật có voọc đầu trắng, voọc quần đùi trắng, quạ khoang, sóc đen...và một số loài khác như thạch sùng mí, tắc kè,chim hồng hoàng…; thực vật có thổ phục linh, lát hoa, kim giao, sến mật. Ðặc biệt ở khu vực Trung Trang có rừng kim giao, một loại cây đặc hữu sống thành tập đoàn trên một diện tích hàng chục ha giữa trung tâm vườn. Theo khảo sát mới đây, ở Cát Bà hiện chỉ còn khoảng từ 50- 60 cá thể voọc đầu trắng và loài động vật này đang có nguy cơ tuyệt chủng rất cao, cần được bảo tồn khẩn cấp.
