Ở đất nước Singapore, có hẳn một truyền thuyết về Merlion. Ngày xưa , Singapore vốn chỉ là một làng chài đơn sơ nhưng lại có rất nhiều cá. Merlion Park Singapore

Theo ông Yue Kheong (Phó tổng cục trưởng Tổng cục du lịch Singapore) cho biết : Nhiều người định nàng tiên cá làm biểu tượng của đất nước, nhưng sau đó lại thấy hình ảnh này quá mức dịu dàng mà chúng tôi lại muốn một biểu tượng mạnh mẽ, năng động cơ. Merlion được xây dựng cao 8,6 m và nặng 70 tấn, được đặt trong công viên rộng hơn 2.500 m2. Ngày nay, biểu tượng Merlion thuộc về chính phủ Singapore, và do Tổng cục du lịch quản lý .
