Môi trường nước ở các thành phố lớn ngày càng xuống cấp bởi hàng trăm cơ sở sản xuất công nghiệp đang gây ô nhiễm do không có công trình và thiết bị xử lý chất thải đạt chất lượng. Bên cạnh đó, một lượng lớn nước thải sinh hoạt từ các khu dân cư đều được thải trực tiếp ra nguồn nước mà không hề qua một giai đoạn xử lý giảm thiểu nào. Theo đánh giá của Bộ Y tế và Bộ Tài nguyên – Môi trường, trung bình, mỗi năm ở Việt Nam có khoảng 9.000 người tử vong vì nguồn nước và điều kiện vệ sinh kém. Cũng theo đó, hàng năm có khoảng 200 ngàn trường hợp mắc bệnh ung thư mới phát hiện mà một trong những nguyên nhân chính là sử dụng nguồn nước ô nhiễm. Tình trạng ô nhiễm nước đã và đang là vấn đề đáng quan tâm đối với toàn xã hội, mà đặc biệt là ô nhiễm kim loại nặng trong nước, do ảnh hưởng của độc tố đến sự phát triển của con người và sự an toàn của hệ sinh thái. Ít nhất 20 loại kim loại đã được xác định như là chất độc hại và một nửa trong số này đã phân tán trong môi trường với một lượng lớn gây ảnh hưởng nguy cấp đến sức khỏe con người
