Mô hình chữ U ngược được S.Kuznets, nhà kinh tế học người Mĩ, xây dựng từ nghiên cứu thực nghiệm năm 1955, nghiên cứu về mối quan hệ giữa thu nhập bình quân đầu người và bất bình đẳng trong phân phối thu nhập. S.Kuznets cũng là người tiên phong trong việc nghiên cứu mối quan hệ này.
S.Kuznets dùng tỷ số thu nhập của 20% giàu nhất sovới thu nhập của 60% nghèo nhất (Tỷ số Kuznets). Ông tiến hành nghiên cứu với một nhóm nhỏ các nước đang phát triển và các nước phát triển. Kết quả cho thấy ở các nước đang phát triển tình trạng bất bình đẳng thu nhập có xu hướng cao hơn các nước phát triển
