Ô nhiểm không khí vẩn đang là vấn đề đau đầu đối với mọi quốc gia hiện nay: đặc biệt ở những thành phố lớn, xe cộ lưu thông liên tục, hay hàng ngàn ống khói thải ra đen kịt bầu trời của các khu công nghiệp.
Sương mù quang hóa là một thuật ngữ sử dụng để miêu tả một dạng ô nhiễm không khí xảy ra ở tầng đối lưu của khí quyển, sinh ra do ánh sáng mặt trời tác dụng lên khí thải động cơ, khí thải công nghiệp…tạo nên những hợp chất có hại cho sức khỏe con người như ozone, aldehit và PAN. Khi ở tầng bình lưu, ozone giúp bảo vệ trái đất tránh khỏi những tia cực tím nhưng khi ozone ở gần mặt đất với nồng độ cao nó sẽ giết chết các mô thực vật, làm cho cây dễ bị tổn thương, làm hại đến các quần xã sinh học, giảm năng suất nông nghiệp và gây nguy hiểm cho con người. Về lâu dài, để hạn chế và kiểm sóat tình trạng sương mù quang hóa cần giảm lượng phát thải khí hyđrocacbon và nitrogen oxides từ các động cơ xe hay các quá trình sản xuất công nghiệp. Đó là vấn đề đau đầu của nhiều nhà khoa học, nghiên cứu và lập chính sách hiện nay. 

Ô nhiểm không khí cũng đang là vấn đề nghiêm trọng ở nước ta, đặc biệt thành phố lớn. Nhưng đối với mức độ như hiện nay, nước ta chưa có hiện tượng sương mù quang hóa. Chỉ sảy ra khi nếu ta không có biện pháp khắc phục tích cực.

But for the present level, our country has not had the chemical fogs. Only fought when we do not have a positive remedy.
