Tiềm năng xuất khẩu đỗ gỗ sang Mỹ là rất lớn, song thị trường này đòi hỏi khắt khe về tính hợp pháp của nguồn nguyên liệu. Nhận định trên được các chuyên gia nêu ra tại hội thảo “Xuất khẩu sang thị trường Mỹ - Cơ hội và thách thức” diễn ra tuần trước, trong khuôn khổ Hội chợ quốc tế Đồ gỗ và Mỹ nghệ lần thứ 8 (VIFA-EXPO 2015) do sở Công thương Tp HCM phối hợp với Hội Mỹ nghệ và chế biến gỗ tp HCM (HAWA) tổ chức.
Theo ông Huỳnh Văn Hạnh, Phó chỉ tịch HAWA, VN đã vươn lên vị trí thứ 2 trong những nước cung ứng đồ gỗ tại Mỹ. Năm 2014, giá trị xuất khẩu gỗ của VN sang Mỹ đạt 2,23 tỉ dô la, tăng 11,1% so với năm 2013. Hiện tại, nguồn nguyên liệu gỗ trong nước mới đáp ứng được 50% cho sản xuất, phân còn lại phải nhập khẩu. Năm 2014, VN đã nhập hơn 1,6 tỉ đô la gỗ nguyên liệu. Ông Hạnh cho biết hai thị trường lớn là Mỹ và châu Âu đang có cái nhìn không mấy thiện cảm về tính hợp pháp cuả gỗ nguyên liệu ở Lào và Campuchia. Do đó, ông khuyên doanh nghiệp nên hạn chế nhập gỗ nguyên liệu từ 2 nước này.
