Thống kê trong Bảng 1 cho thấy từ nhiều năm qua, Nhật Bản luôn là thị trường thương mại quan trọng của Việt Nam, chiếm tỷ trọng lên đến 10% trong tổng kim ngạch xuất nhập khẩu của Việt Nam với tất cả các thị trường trên thế giới. Tính đến hết tháng 11/2013, tổng kim ngạch hai chiều giữa Việt Nam và Nhật Bản xếp thứ 4 trong tất cả các thị trường mà Việt Nam xuất khẩu, nhập khẩu hàng hóa; trong đó, xếp thứ 2 về xuất khẩu và xếp thứ 3 về nhập khẩu.
