Theo Futurism, Mặt Trăng giống như có màu xanh dương giữa bầu trời đêm. Đây là hiện tượng rất hiếm khi xảy ra, do các phân tử bụi trong khí quyển phân tán ánh sáng, khiến Mặt Trăng mang màu xanh khi nhìn từ mặt đất.

Earthsky.org đưa ra hai định nghĩa về trăng xanh. Theo quan niệm truyền thống, từ trăng xanh dùng để chỉ lần trăng tròn thứ ba trong một mùa có 4 lần trăng tròn. Mùa ở đây là khoảng thời gian giữa ngày điểm chí (hạ chí hoặc đông chí) và điểm phân (xuân phân hoặc thu phân). Thông thường, mỗi mùa chỉ có ba lần trăng tròn. Do đó, sự kiện trăng tròn diễn ra 4 lần trong một mùa vô cùng hiếm gặp và chưa từng xuất hiện từ tháng 8/2013.
