Nhà tù Hỏa Lò được xây dựng từ năm 1896 và từng là nơi giam giữ rất nhiều tù nhân chính trị Việt Nam thời Pháp thuộc. Sau năm 1954, Hỏa Lò thuộc quyền quản lý của nước nhà và cũng từng giam giữ các phi công Mỹ nhảy dù, trong đó có Thượng nghị sỹ John McCain.

Ngày nay, Hỏa Lò chỉ còn lại một góc nhỏ làm nơi tham quan cho khách du lịch Hà Nội. Khu vực còn lại là cao ốc thương mại Tháp Hà Nội. Giờ mở cửa tham quan Hỏa Lò từ 8h đến 17h với giá vé 10.000-20.000 đồng. Phần lớn du khách ghé thăm là người nước ngoài.
