Nhìn chung, các định nghĩa về văn hóa hiện nay rất đa dạng. Mỗi định nghĩa đề cập đến những dạng thức hoặc những lĩnh vực khác nhau trong văn hóa. Như định nghĩa của Tylor và của Hồ Chí Minh thì xem văn hóa là tập hợp những thành tựu mà con người đạt được trong quá trình tồn tại và phát triển, từ tri thức, tôn giáo, đạo đức, ngôn ngữ,… đến âm nhạc, pháp luật… Còn định nghĩa của F. Boas thì xem tất cả những lĩnh vực đạt được của con người trong cuộc sống là văn hóa. Với cách hiểu này cùng với những định nghĩa đã nêu thì văn hóa chính là nấc thang đưa con người vượt lên trên những loài động vật khác; và văn hóa là sản phẩm do con người tạo ra trong quá trình lao động nhằm mục đích sinh tồn.
