Trong quá trình hội nhập của nước ta và các chương trình giáo dục tiểu học hiện nay, tiếng Anh cùng với các môn học khác trong trường tiểu học có vai trò đóng góp quan trọng của đào tạo cần được phát triển toàn diện con người, đáp ứng yêu cầu của đất nước trong thời kỳ mới.
Muốn học sinh tiểu học học tốt môn Tiếng Anh thì mỗi người giáo viên dạy môn Tiếng Anh không phải chỉ truyền đạt, giảng giải theo các tài liệu sẵn có trong sách giáo khoa, trong sách hướng dẫn và sách thiết kế bài giảng một cách rập khuôn, máy móc làm cho học sinh học tập một cách thụ động . Nếu chỉ dạy học như vậy thì việc học tập của học sinh sẽ diễn ra thật đơn điệu, tẻ nhạt và kết quả học tập sẽ không có hiệu quả. Nó là một trong những nguyên nhân gây ra cản trở việc đào tạo các em thành những con người năng động, tự tin, sáng tạo sẵn sàng thích ứng với những đổi mới diễn ra hàng ngày.
Trong những năm gần đây, yêu cầu của giáo dục hiện nay đòi hỏi phải đổi mới phương pháp dạy học ở tất cả các môn học và các cấp học, nhằm nâng cao chất lượng dạy và học. Chính vì vậy, môn Tiếng Anh nói chung và môn Tiếng Anh ở bậc tiểu học nói riêng cũng cần phải có những đổi mới mạnh mẽ hơn nữa, phát huy tính tích cực, chủ động sáng tạo của học sinh, lấy học sinh làm trung tâm. Vì vậy, người giáo viên phải gây hứng thú học tập cho các em bằng cách lôi cuốn các em tham gia vào các hoạt động học tập. Trò chơi có nội dung phong phú, sử dụng ngôn ngữ thật lý thú và bổ ích phù hợp với nhận thức của các em.
Theo hướng dẫn của Bộ giáo dục và Đào tạo trong các bộ sách hiện đang giảng dạy tại các trường Tiểu học bộ môn Tiếng Anh tự chọn, bộ sách Tiếng Anh 3, 4, 5 theo chuẩn Châu Âu của Bộ giáo dục và Đào tạo bám sát sườn nhất so với yêu cầu về nợi dung giảng dạy Tiếng Anh cho học sinh Tiểu học của Bộ đề ra. Từ năm 2011 2012 chương trình đã chính thức được đưa vào giảng dạy, nội dung phong phú và gần gũi với học sinh hơn. Điều này dẫn tới việc tìm tòi học hỏi để đổi mới phương pháp dạy và học của giáo viên và học sinh cho phù hợp với chương trình. Chương trình “Tiếng Anh 3” là một giáo trình hội tụ đầy đủ cả 4 kỹ năng: Nghe – Nói – Đọc – Viết. Hiện nay trong thời kỳ hội nhập, người Việt Nam có nhiều cơ hội tiếp xúc với người nước ngoài. Chính vì vậy kỹ năng Nghe và Nói rất quan trọng trong quá trình giao tiếp. Hai kỹ năng này chiếm phần lớn trong một bài học của “ Tiêng Anh 3” theo chuẩn Châu Âu. Người Việt Nam với truyền thống rụt rè, nhút nhát nên việc giao tiếp còn e ngại. Các em ngại nói dẫn đến nghe và nói yếu. Môi trường Tiểu học là nơi tạo điều kiện cho việc hình thành thói quen và khả năng giao tiếp. Giao tiếp nhiều dẫn đến sự mạnh dạn, không sợ sai khi đứng trước lớp và những người xung quanh.Bằng hình thức thông qua các trò chơi sẽ giúp các em mạnh dạn, tự tin các em lĩnh hội những kiến thức và khả năng vận dụng ngôn ngữ trong giao tiếp một cách dễ dàng, củng cố, khắc sâu kiến thức một cách vững chắc, tạo cho các em niềm say mê, hứng thú trong học tập, trong việc làm. Khi chúng ta đưa ra được các trò chơi trong giờ học Tiếng Anh một cách thường xuyên, khoa học thì chắc chắn chất lượng dạy học môn Tiếng Anh sẽ ngày càng nâng cao.
