Theo cách tiếp cận này, xã hội là một đấu trường hoặc “chiến trường” trong đó tình trạng bất bình đẳng, sự mâu thuẫn, cạnh tranh, đối kháng thuộc về bản chất của xã hội. Theo cách tiếp cận này, sự hài hòa, ổn định trong xã hội chỉ là những ảo tưởng bởi giữa người với người hoặc giữa các bộ phận cấu thành nên xã hội luôn ở trong quá trình thay đổi, đấu tranh không ngừng và chính sự đấu tranh, thay đổi này lại góp phần tạo nên động lực đấu tranh mới, tạo nên tình trạng bất bình đẳng xã hội.
Theo cách tiếp cận này, xã hội đương thời là xã hội bất công và đẳng cấp trong đó người với người bị chia thành nhiều thứ bậc khác nhau do sự khác biệt về tài sản, địa vị xã hội, giới tính, và chủng tộc. Cách tiếp cận này cũng có xu hướng cho rằng, đấu tranh (và mâu thuẫn) là động lực thúc đẩy xã hội tiến lên.
Những con đẻ của cách tiếp cận này chính là hệ tư tưởng của chủ nghĩa nữ quyền (feminism) trong đó nhìn nhận xã hội như một môi trường tràn ngập sự áp bức đối với phụ nữ bởi phái mạnh (nam giới). Nói cách khác, theo cách tiếp cận này, xã hội hiện thời là xã hội được cấu tạo, từ bản chất, theo hướng chỉ thuận lợi và thăng hoa cho phái nam và tước bỏ những cơ hội của phái nữ.
