Việc nghiên cứu đối chiếu giúp ta thấy rõ được những khác biệt cơ bản của cấu trúc cú pháp trong tiếng Việt và trong các ngôn ngữ biến hình như tiếng Anh, tiếng Pháp, tiếng Nga.
Ngôn ngữ của nhân loại vô cùng đa dạng, nhưng sự đa dạng đó có những giới hạn của nó. Việc đối chiếu các ngôn ngữ giúp ta thấy được những giới hạn của nó. Nói cách khác, một mặt, ngôn ngữ học đối chiếu giúp ta biết được những gì ngôn ngữ nhân loại có thể có, mặt khác, nó cũng cho ta biết được những gì ngôn ngữ nhân loại không thể có. Qua đó, con người hiểu ngôn ngữ của mình rõ hơn.
