Về nguồn lao động: do mức sinh giảm, tỉ lệ số người trong độ tuổi lao động so với tổng dân số đã có xu hướng tăng.
Người dân Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh luôn thể hiện tính năng động, sáng tạo, nhạy bén với kỹ thuật và công nghệ mới, tay nghề khá có khả năng nhanh chóng thích nghi và hội nhập vào điều kiện mới của nền kinh tế thị trường. Lực lượng khoa học kỹ thuật của Thành phố khá đông, đa dạng về nguồn đào tạo và ngành nghề, có quan hệ rộng rãi với giới khoa học nước ngoài.

Tổng sản phẩm nội địa Tp. Hồ Chí Minh (GDP) liên tục tăng, năm 2004 đạt 136.488 tỷ VNĐ, cao gấp 3,6 lần so với năm 1995 (36.975 tỷ VNĐ) - theo giá thực tế.
Mức độ tăng trưởng GDP của Tp. Hồ Chí Minh trong giai đoạn 1985 - 1990 là 7,8% năm, giai đoạn 1990 - 1995 là 12,6% năm và 10,2% từ 1995 - 2000. Năm 2004 là 11,6%.
