Mô hình VNEN có nguồn gốc từ Colombia những năm 1995-2000 để dạy học trong những lớp ghép ở vùng miền núi khó khăn, theo nguyên tắc lấy HS làm trung tâm. Mô hình này vừa kế thừa những mặt tích cực của mô hình trường học truyền thống, vừa có sự đổi mới căn bản về mục tiêu đào tạo, nội dung chương trình, tài liệu học tập, phương pháp dạy và học, cách đánh giá, cách tổ chức quản lý lớp học, cơ sở vật chất phục vụ cho dạy và học. Một bài học được thiết kế gồm những hoạt động như: hoạt động cơ bản, thực hành và ứng dụng. Các phòng học theo mô hình VNEN được bố trí linh động với đồ dùng dạy và học sẵn có để HS tham khảo. HS được tổ chức ngồi học theo nhóm, ngồi quay mặt vào nhau để cùng trao đổi và tự học. Quản lý lớp học là Hội đồng tự quản HS, do HS bầu ra và đảm nhiệm. Cách làm này giúp HS phát huy quyền làm chủ trong học tập, rèn luyện kỹ năng hợp tác làm việc theo nhóm.

Năm học 2012-2013, trường TH Đinh Tiên Hoàng (huyện Châu Đức) được ngành GD-ĐT chọn thí điểm thực hiện dạy học theo mô hình VNEN cho HS khối lớp 2 và 3. Mỗi tiết học được thiết kế thành từng nhóm HS. Qua 1 năm thực hiện, HS ở các lớp học theo mô hình VNEN có nhiều tiến bộ. Các em chủ động trong việc học, kết quả cuối năm học, số HS đạt học lực khá, giỏi cao hơn so với lớp chưa thực hiện mô hình. Từ hiệu quả ban đầu này, ở các năm học tiếp đó, ngành GD-ĐT đã nhân rộng ra các trường TH khác trên địa bàn tỉnh.

Ông Nguyễn Khánh Thiệp, Hiệu trưởng trường TH Đinh Tiên Hoàng cho biết, mô hình VNEN là sự đổi mới trong phương pháp dạy và học theo nguyên tắc lấy HS làm trung tâm, học tập tương tác giữa các HS, chuyển việc truyền thụ của GV thành hướng dẫn HS tự học. “Tôi cho rằng, học tập theo mô hình VNEN, HS nâng cao được tinh thần tự giác và tự tin trong học tập, phát huy năng lực tự học của bản thân. Ngoài ra, các em còn được rèn luyện kỹ năng giao tiếp, làm việc nhóm và mạnh dạn đưa ra ý kiến của mình trước đám đông”, ông Thiệp nói thêm.
