To be dignified or have dignity is first to be in control of oneself, competently and appropriately exercising one's powers. Most obviously, then, the dignity is about self-command and autonomy. As withso many other matters relating to moral sentiments, dignity is partlyconsciously, mostly unconsciously signalled through the body – in ourbearing, in how we hold ourselves. The closely associated sense ofrespect also implies autonomy, for to respect someone implies refrainingfrom attempting to colonise or control their lives, and keeping acertain ' respectful ' distance from them.
